Accessing ePress publications

Access to online versions of Monash University ePress publications is by:

• Subscription (individual or institutional) to the online version of the publication. Note that if the publication is a book rather than a journal, purchasing an online 'subscription' will give you online access to the book.
• Pay-per article/chapter: purchase access to the online version of journal article or book chapter.

Some ePress publications are also available in print.

Abstracts are free for all users.

Subscriptions

Individual online subscriptions

What do you get access to and for how long?

• Unless otherwise advertised, access to journals is provided on a calendar year basis, terminating on 31 December each year.
  Earlybird Offers: If the subscription taken out is an Earlybird offer, the early access applies only to the online version of the publication; for example, if a subscription is for the year 2009 but the Earlybird offer has access to the journal starting in September 2008, this early access is to the online version only and does not entitle the subscriber to the print issues of the publication for 2008.
• Access to journals includes access to back issues where those issues were published by the ePress.
• It is currently ePress policy to make all journal content older than two years (i.e. over two years since first publication by the ePress) open access (free to all users, whether subscribers or not). Users should note that when the ePress makes content open access two years after first publication, open access to this content may be provided through a different interface.
• Access to journals includes full-text HTML and PDF versions of papers.
• Access to books is provided for two years from date of purchase. During that time, you may download the book for your personal access and use according to the terms and conditions of the ePress individual licence, including access and use in the period following two years from date of purchase.
• Access to books includes access to the full-text HTML, and, as of May 2008, access to the PDF.

How do you access your subscribed content?

Access to both books and journals is by user name and password, created when you subscribe.

Downloading and storing papers

Individuals who have purchased access may download and store papers for personal use only as described in our Terms and conditions for individual users.

How do you purchase a subscription?

Click the 'purchase an online subscription' link on the homepage of the publication. Payment for individual online access must be made online with a credit card. Credit card purchases made online are processed through a secure server. When the padlock at the bottom of the screen is in the locked position, the site is using SSL RC4, 128 bit encryption.

Important note: If you are taking advantage of a special offer (for example a discount offer or a conference offer), do not use the purchase method described above. Instead, you will need to follow the payment instructions in the offer. Purchase instructions for special-offers are also often published on the homepage of the publication in the box at right labelled 'Special offers/news'.

How does institutional access work?

Online access for institutional subscribers is by one of the following methods, the method being selected by the institution as part of the online access-activation process for institutional subscriptions. If the choice is 'Trusted Proxy', please also ask the ePress to supply you with 'Trusted Proxy Server Set Up Instructions'.

• IP Address. Authorised Users and Walk-in-Users are identified and authenticated by the use of Internet Protocol ('IP') address/es provided by Licensee to the ePress as part of the online access-activation process.
• Proxy IP Range. Authorised Users and Walk-in-Users are identified and authenticated by the use of a range of authorised proxy IP addresses provided by the Licensee to the ePress as part of online the access-activation process.
• Trusted Proxy. Authorised Users are identified and authenticated by the Licensee behind an authorised proxy IP or range of authorised proxy IPs provided by the Licensee to the ePress as part of the online access-activation process. Walk-in-Users are authenticated by the use of IP address/es provided by Licensee to the ePress as part of the online access-activation process.
• Domain. Authorised Users and Walk-in-Users are identified and authenticated by use of a domain which corresponds to a particular IP range provided by the Licensee to the ePress as part of the online access-activation process.

Multi-campus access

All institutional online subscriptions include multi-campus access.

How to purchase an institutional subscription

For direct orders (i.e. not through a subscription agent), fill out our online Institutional subscription order form. Note, however, that if you have previously purchased a subscription for your institution, you do not need to fill out this form. Instead, go directly to the 'Purchase an online subscription' link on the publication homepage (you will need your 'institutional administrator' username and password).

Instead, follow the instructions provided with the special offer. Purchase instructions for special-offers to institutions are also often published on the homepage of the publication in the box at right labelled 'Special offers/news'.

• If your institution is elsewhere in the world, you can order through your normal agent.

Pay per article/chapter

What do you get access to and for how long?

You get access to the online PDF version of a journal article or book chapter. For a 24-hour period after purchase, you will be able to gain full access to and download the PDF of the article/chapter. For some publications, you have the additional option of choosing to purchase a PDF+ version (PDF with links for onscreen viewing).

How do you make a pay-per-article/chapter purchase?

Navigate to the publication's homepage and then to the article/chapter you wish to purchase. Click the 'PDF' link associated with the article/chapter.

Processing of the credit card transaction is managed by Westpac, one of Australia's major banking institutions with a strong commitment to customer service and provision of e-commerce services.

HTML printing tips

The following information is intended to help you print HTML versions of ePress journal articles and book chapters.

• When printing, it may be helpful to change the page orientation in your print settings to 'Landscape'.
• If your browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), change the text size to smaller/smallest. In most versions of IE, this is done via 'View' on the browser toolbar.
• Highlight the section that you want to print and click on 'Print Selection' from your print menu, where that is an option. This may still require the page orientation to be changed to 'Landscape' and/or the text size to be reduced.
